Mother's Day Fire Devastates Pig Sanctuary

LAKE WALES | A fire that severely damaged a mobile home whose owners rescue pot-bellied pigs rekindled early today, further damaging the structure and injuring some of the animals there.

Faulty wiring in a light fixture on the front porch was blamed for starting the fire Sunday at the doublewide mobile home of Clinton and Darylnn Martin at 2842 Rosalie Lake Road. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire without injury to either the Martins or any animals there and most of the contents were salvaged.

Red Cross provided temporary shelter for the Martins during the night, so they were not home when the fire started again.

At 3:33 a.m. today, a neighbor saw the home was burning again and called firefighters. This time, most of the contents were destroyed. A cat and three pigs were injured and all had to be euthanized.

A strong breeze overnight is suspected of causing the fire to start again.
