Mother's Day Fire Devastates Pig Sanctuary

LAKE WALES | A fire that severely damaged a manufactured home whose owners rescue pot-bellied pigs and other animals rekindled early today, completely destroying the structure and killing some of the animals there.

Faulty wiring in a light fixture on the front porch was blamed for starting the fire Sunday morning at the doublewide manufactured home of Clinton and Darlynn Martin at 2842 Rosalie Lake Road. Firefighters thought they had finally extinguished the fire without injury to the Martins and most of the contents were still salvageable after they were called out to the house for the second time that afternoon. Two cats and a cockatiel perished.

Red Cross provided temporary shelter for the Martins during the night, so they were not home when the fire restarted for the third time.

At 3:33 a.m. today, a neighbor saw the home was burning again and called firefighters. This time, everything was destroyed. Three potbelly pigs, all born without eyes, perished in the early morning fire.

Gusting winds, present all day, are suspected of causing the fire to start again.
